The meals on offer have been carefully designed. They are created by qualified dieticians and then cooked by renowned chefs to meet the needs of people with diabetes, heart disease, or those recovering from cancer. Each dish is fresh, never frozen, and meets strict nutritional criteria while retaining the creativity and pleasure of a real restaurant meal. For Bruno Didier, head of CookUnity's business activity, healthy eating can be good for your health without sacrificing taste or the pleasure of eating.
The program is based on the California government's CalAIM Community Supports initiative, which allows Anthem Blue Cross to cover the cost of these meals for eligible individuals. Signing up is easy. Medi-Cal (California's public health program) members can check in just a few minutes to see if they are eligible and then receive a weekly selection of meals tailored to their needs. The service can be activated for up to 90 days and guarantees a varied and balanced diet delivered directly to your home.
The idea is to recognize that diet plays an essential role in health and that a well-designed meal can aid recovery in the same way as medication. The first phase of the program already targets hundreds of households in Sacramento, with an expansion to other areas covered by Anthem Blue Cross planned for 2026.
CookUnity relies on a nationwide network of chefs and dietitians to offer these tailor-made meals. More than 100 independent chefs, including prestigious award winners, contribute to this mission, notably eight-time award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson. The company has become the first platform to directly connect chefs with consumers nationwide. Families, and now low-income patients, can enjoy a true culinary experience without leaving their homes.
