In December 2022, Chess.com reached 100 million members. That was a major milestone at the time, but today, the American company is celebrating an even more impressive milestone: a quarter of a billion. These 250,000,000 chess enthusiasts, experts and novices alike, bring the platform to life and spread the legacy of this ancient game.

The jump from 100 million to 250 million members was spectacular. By early 2023, growth was so rapid that the company's servers sometimes struggled to keep up with the increasing number of players. In 2024, participation in India exploded after Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest world champion in history at just 18 years old.
In 2025, chess made its debut at the highly publicized Esports World Cup (a major global video game competition watched by millions of viewers and considered one of the most prestigious events in esports), where five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen won the $250,000 first prize. And, at the end of January 2026, the documentary Queen of Chess, dedicated to Judit Polgar, has already reached a wide audience on Netflix. Many new developments are still to come in 2026 and beyond, including a new Netflix production, Untold: Chess Mates, dedicated to the controversy between Carlsen and Hans Niemann in 2022.
Chess.com's business model is based on a freemium system: free access to most features, but with premium subscriptions (Silver, Gold, Diamond) giving access to exclusive videos, advanced analysis, and high-level tournaments. The platform also organizes leading professional events such as the Chess.com Global Championship and PogChamps, bringing together amateur players, popular streamers, and grandmasters, giving it a hybrid audience that spans traditional sports and digital culture.
