Rail Travel: Eurostar Partners with Plusgrade to Launch an Upgrade Auction System
Eurostar, the rail company that connects many European countries (notably France and England), has partnered with Plusgrade, a company managed by the private equity fund General Atlantic. The goals are multifaceted: to make the upgrade process more flexible and accessible for passengers, while enabling Plusgrade to strengthen its position in the passenger rail market.
Plusgrade wants to introduce the option to bid for an upgrade, rather than paying directly for Eurostar Plus class. The Canadian company is no stranger to ancillary revenue and traveler services. For example, it is behind the “Subscribe to Miles” innovation.
“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to enhancing the travel experience for passengers while generating significant ancillary revenue for our partners. Together, we’re offering passengers more opportunities to travel in optimal conditions, while helping Eurostar optimize its operations and resources,” said Ken Harris, CEO and founder of Plusgrade.
How does the auction work?
Eligible passengers will receive an email invitation before their departure and will be able to submit a bid up to 24 hours before their trip. They will be notified at least one day in advance if their bid has been accepted. This innovative system allows Eurostar to maximize the use of its premium seats while offering travelers more flexible access to superior services.
This service is being gradually rolled out on routes between London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Brussels, but the rail company plans to expand it to other destinations this year.
The Eurostar Plus Experience: Comfort and Exclusive Services
Upgrading to Eurostar Plus (formerly Standard Premier) radically transforms the travel experience, offering a level of comfort that is particularly sought after by business travelers and discerning leisure travelers.
Benefits include:
- Superior seating comfort: Specially designed cars equipped with wider, reclining velvet seats, ample legroom, and individual power outlets and USB ports.
- On-site dining options: A light meal (breakfast, lunch, or dinner, depending on the time of day) accompanied by a selection of hot and cold beverages, served directly at the office.
- Enhanced tranquility: Quieter travel spaces, ideal for working or relaxing during your cross-Channel or continental journey.
Auction Mechanism vs. Standard Rates: The Financial Equation
The integration of Plusgrade technology introduces unprecedented pricing flexibility. Traditionally, the fixed price difference between a Standard ticket and a Eurostar Plus ticket ranges from €60 to €120 per trip, depending on the season. With the auction system, passengers can try to secure this upgrade at a fraction of the list price.
On the ground, initial feedback from passengers highlights the fun and cost-effective nature of the program. Several travelers report having won an upgrade on a one-way flight from Paris to London for a bid of just 30 €, thereby enjoying the in-flight meal and optimal comfort at a total cost well below the original price of the higher class of service.
Network Deployment and Expansion Schedule
The partnership, launched along the historic routes connecting London to major European capitals (Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam), is following a rigorous rollout roadmap for 2026:
- First half of 2026: Completion of software integration and launch of auctions for major cross-Channel routes.
- Third Quarter 2026: Planned expansion of the auction system to include former Thalys mainland routes, particularly to Germany (Liège, Aachen, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund).
- Late 2026: Full integration of seasonal destinations (Eurostar Snow to the Alps and Eurostar Sun to the South of France).
Financial Strategy: Optimizing Profitability in the Face of Challenges in the Aviation Industry
For Eurostar, this project led by Plusgrade addresses ayield management imperative. In passenger transportation, an empty seat at departure represents a permanent loss of profit. Plusgrade’s predictive algorithms analyze historical occupancy rates in real time to open the bidding system only on trains where the Premium class is not fully booked, thereby avoiding the cannibalization effect on full-fare tickets.
This optimization generates ancillary revenue with a near-full margin for the company, as the marginal cost of an additional meal on board is negligible compared to the profit from the auction.
Furthermore, this pricing flexibility strengthens Eurostar’s competitive position against airlines (such as British Airways or Air France). By making its premium class more accessible, Eurostar attracts a “premium leisure” or “bleisure” (business travel combined with leisure) clientele that might otherwise have been tempted by the upgrade options offered by short-haul airlines, while highlighting the fact that its carbon footprint is up to 90% lower than that of air travel.
