As a participant in the Vintage Altaroc Odyssey 2022, Spanish company Windar, which specializes in the manufacture of components for wind turbines, has become one of the pioneers in its sector in terms of waste recovery. By 2022, the company had treated or recycled 82% of its head office waste.
In 2021, the company adopted a sustainability strategy that includes circular economy targets so that, by 2025, over 75% of its hazardous and non-hazardous waste, generated at plants worldwide, will be recoverable.
A few days ago, the company commissioned an external third party to approve its "Zero Waste" strategy.
According to the study carried out by LRQA, one of the world's leading certification and inspection firms, Windar's waste recovery ratio for 2022 is 82%, in line with its target.
LRQA therefore awarded Windar the "Zero Waste to Landfill" label , taking into account the ISO 1729: 2019 standard. The company had previously had to prove that its waste, once sent for final treatment by an authorized manager, had not been burned or deposited in a landfill, so that it would not have a negative impact on the environment or human health.
Windar will shortly be rolling out this process to its international plants.
The company, which has an order book of overa billion euros for the next few years, has also just obtained approval for the construction of its new production plant in Poland. With a 17-hectare site for the manufacture and storage of its wind turbine components in the Polish port of Szczecin, the project should be completed within 2 years, at a total cost of 100 million euros. Windar now has 13 production sites around the world, to be as close as possible to its customers and reduce its carbon footprint.
