WuXi Biologics Ireland has integrated sustainability principles into its day-to-day operations, and has just received the Operational Excellence Award.
The site runs on 100% renewable electricity, and its new rainwater recovery systems have collected over 1,100 m³ of water for reuse (equivalent to the average annual water consumption of 7 to 10 European households). Motion-sensing LED lighting, building management systems and passive daylighting help reduce the site's energy consumption. Back-up power is provided by biofuel-powered generators, reducing potential emissions by 30%. A car-sharing program has also been launched to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and 31 new electric vehicle charging stations have been installed on campus.
"We are deeply honored to receive this distinction. Thanks to its solid foundations in operational excellence and sustainability, our Irish site is establishing itself as a benchmark biopharmaceutical production hub, illustrating Ireland's industrial strengths for international partners, and serving as a model for the future of global biomedical manufacturing," boasts Dr Chris Chen, CEO of the Chinese firm.
The award received for the Irish site is not the first to crown the head of the Chinese company, already rewarded for its positive impact on the environment. WuXi Biologics is currently running several hundred projects, and has achieved a 99% success rate in over 300 large-scale production campaigns, symbolizing the quality and relevance of the drugs it develops.
