CMA CGM (France's leading shipping company and third largest worldwide) is set to modernize its communications system using the low-orbit network of Eutelsat (a French satellite operator and one of the world's three largest), which will be integrated into 350 ships thanks to the expertise of Marlink, which already equips Poland's largest shipping company. The French company will be responsible for the day-to-day management and maintenance of the network and will monitor its proper functioning in all circumstances.
This partnership will enable CMA CGM to benefit from ultra-low latency and high throughput, matching the performance of land-based infrastructure. This responsiveness will enable smooth video calls, remote assistance, and the use of onboard applications without downtime. This continuous connectivity will also serve as a strategic ecological lever for the French shipping company, powering weather routing and performance tracking tools. Academic research shows an average 4.5% reduction in fuel consumption when routes are optimized based on weather conditions.
For CMA CGM, there are multiple challenges, from real-time optimization of shipping routes to reduce fuel consumption, to securing the exchange of massive amounts of data between ships and land-based centers, to transforming the daily lives of crews through permanent high-speed broadband access.
The solution proposed by Marlink also integrates cloud services, cybersecurity tools , and industrial data collection devices. This technological convergence aims to centralize network management and guarantee consistent service quality across the French shipping company's entire fleet, which serves more than 420 ports.
