Marlink takes another step forward in maritime transport protection. Following the launch of an entity dedicated solely to cybersecurity and one to anticipate cyberattacks, Polsteam, Eastern Europe's largest shipping company, has entrusted Marlink with the task of equipping its fleet with a mixed network, deployed on board fifty ships. This network combines two satellite families orchestrated from a single platform, with a median target latency of 20 milliseconds, thanks to the support of SpaceX (specialized in space transportation and satellite deployment).
This responsiveness enables smooth video calls, remote assistance and the use of on-board applications without downtime. This continuous connectivity also feeds weather routing and performance monitoring tools: academic studies show an average 4.5% drop in fuel consumption when the route is optimized according to the weather. Finally, Marlink industrializes deployments. With over 900 remote installations by 2024, compared with just over 200 in 2023 (+350%), the Paris-based company is limiting downtime and speeding up the commissioning of new on-board services.
On the protection side, Marlink installs a veritable digital shield combining several layers of defense (filtering of high-risk sites, control of authorized programs, intrusion detection, protection against viruses). In the first half of 2024 alone, 1,800 ships were targeted, with over 23,000 pieces of malware detected. The French operator has been pursuing the same objective since day one: to avoid breakdowns and blockages, and guarantee continuity of operations in an increasingly exposed and demanding environment.
