Maurice Tchenio has had an exceptional career, closely tied to the birth and development of private equity in Europe. As the founderApax in 1972, he helped shape this asset class from its very beginnings, playing an active role in its structuring and international expansion. For over 30 years, he managed several funds, helping to finance and grow numerous companies before handing over Apax his partners in 2010. Very early on, he identified a major limitation of private equity: its inaccessibility to private investors. To address this, he founded Altamir in 1995, a publicly traded company that allowed investors to indirectly invest in the same assets as institutional investors with much more accessible investment amounts. The success was significant, with growth from 12 million to over 1.3 billion euros, illustrating the long-term power of this asset class.However, over time, Altamir became less liquid and no longer fully fulfilled its mission of accessibility. It was in this context that Altaroc was born, co-founded with Frédéric Stolar, with the ambition of opening up access to global private equity even further to private investors, in a more fluid, diversified, and modern way.Beyond finance, Maurice Tchenio has also applied the principles of private equity to social causes by creating the Alpha Oméga Foundation. Dedicated to the education and professional integration of young people, the foundation is entirely funded by private equity investments, demonstrating that this asset class can also be a lever for sustainable positive impact.
