The commissioning process for the largest offshore wind farm in the USA began last week, marking a significant milestone in the development of large-scale renewable energies in the country. The project, called Vineyard Wind 1, is piloted by Spanish company Iberdrola and boasts an impressive 806 MW capacity, capable of powering over 400,000 homes.
Commissioning began last week, marked by the first delivery of energy to the Massachusetts region. Ignacio Sánchez Galán, President of Iberdrola, pointed out that the wind farm could supply clean electricity equivalent to half the needs of the city of Boston in the state.
With a total investment of $3 billion, the five-turbine complex is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of the year.
The Vineyard Wind 1 project began construction in 2021, with each turbine manufactured by the Asturian company Windar Renovables, present in the Vintage Altaroc Odyssey 2022. This manufacturing process will result in significant savings in greenhouse gas emissions, helping to reduce up to 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
Each turbine, dubbed the " largest turbine in the western world ", consists of a tower, three blades and a nacelle, and has an impressive rated capacity of 13 MW. This achievement testifies to the growing commitment to large-scale renewable energy in the USA.
