Eye Health in India: ASG Eye Hospitals Unveils a Major Investment Plan to Eliminate Barriers to Care
In India, the need for eye care is growing rapidly, due in part to an aging population, rising rates of diabetes, and continued disparities in access to specialized care in many regions. Approximately 35 million Indians are visually impaired, and nearly 5 million are blind. There is a critical need to establish a comprehensive network of state-of-the-art eye care across the country. ASG Eye Hospitals aims to meet this demand by bringing care closer to patients, particularly in mid-sized cities and underserved areas.
“Our significant investment sends a clear message: no Indian should lose their sight due to a lack of access to care or financial barriers,” said Dr. Arun Singhvi, Managing Director of ASG Eye Hospitals.
This development plan is backed by a substantial investment of more than $150 million, provided by international private equity consortia (including General Atlantic Kedaara Capital). These funds will support an aggressive consolidation strategy aimed at transforming a historically fragmented healthcare landscape into a standardized national infrastructure.
A Methodical Expansion Amid Industry Players
The Indian healthcare company’s goal is to expand into 100 new districts each year, significantly broadening its geographic coverage. To strengthen its clinical capabilities across all regions, the group also plans to acquire 8 to 10 specialized ophthalmology practices per year, in order to develop cutting-edge expertise and strengthen local healthcare services. In parallel with these acquisitions, the group plans to open 5 to 7 regional centers each year to support care pathways focused on advanced procedures.
This pace of expansion allows ASG Eye Hospitals to outpace mid-sized competitors and position itself neck-and-neck with the long-standing leaders in the Indian ophthalmic market, such as Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital and Eye-Q. ASG’s competitive advantage lies in its targeted expansion into “Tier-2” and “Tier-3” cities (medium-sized, fast-growing cities), where penetration of cutting-edge technologies remains low, while competitors are struggling in saturated megacities like Mumbai and Delhi.
A cutting-edge technical facility serving the provinces
This strategy will enable ASG Eye Hospitals to expand more quickly while leveraging its existing medical teams. Founded in 2005, the company has established itself over the years as a key player in eye care in India, with a model focused on common but essential procedures such as cataract surgery, retinal treatments, and glaucoma care. By expanding its network of centers, the group also aims to increase the number of surgeries performed each year and improve early intervention for vision disorders.
In addition to opening new locations, part of the investment will be allocated to medical equipment, staff training, and improving the patient experience. The new centers incorporate state-of-the-art medical technologies that were previously available only in regional capitals:
- Robotic phacoemulsification cataract surgery: A sutureless, micro-incision technique that reduces postoperative recovery time to less than 24 hours.
- Contoura Vision Laser Platforms: An ultra-precise corneal topography tool for refractive surgery (LASIK) that maps 22,000 unique points on the eye to deliver visual results that exceed industry standards.
- Advanced Retinal Imaging: Noninvasive OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) angiography systems for the early detection of diabetic retinopathy, a major cause of blindness in India.
The Human Impact: Validation Through Patient Feedback
On the ground, the widespread adoption of these technologies and the alignment of fees with public reimbursement schedules (notably the Ayushman Bharat universal health coverage program) are transforming daily life for communities. Testimonials from rural patients highlight the end of a double burden: that of having to travel for dozens of hours to reach a trusted clinic, and that of family debt incurred to finance cataract surgery. The standardization of ASG clinics ensures a consistently high quality of care, whether a patient is treated in the heart of Rajasthan or at a clinic in the state of Kerala.
