Sector Specialization: A Structural Advantage in Private Equity
Summary
The private equity market has become deep enough—particularly in the United States and Europe—to allow for a high degree of sector-specific specialization among management teams.
This video identifies three models: generalist funds, whose teams cover all sectors; specialized funds, which focus on one or two resilient sectors such as healthcare or software; and multi-sector funds, whose teams are organized into distinct sector-specific units. A third model is emerging—known as the thematic model—in which professionals develop expertise by segment rather than by sector, combining in-depth knowledge with flexibility in asset allocation. Specialization offers a competitive advantage in deal origination as well as in creating operational value, through proven playbooks and dedicated support teams.
